Effect of Cadmium Levels on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth of Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) Under Salinity Stress

چکیده
Cadmium is highly toxic heavy metal. Soil factors such as pH, caution exchange capacity, CaCO3 content and salinity have a significant influence on Cd uptake by plants. Moreover, soil salinity has a great impact on crop yield in Iran. Therefore, the effect of four salt levels (0, 45, 90, 180 mM) of NaCl solutions and four concentrations (0, 15, 30, 60 ppm) of Cadmium sulfate solutions on seed germination of spinach was studied in two separate experiments. Treatments were arranged in a factorial manner in base of completely randomized design with four replications. The most seed germination percentage decreased significantly with increasing after 180mM NaCl concentration under levels of Cd. Increased salt concentration caused a decrease in germination percentage and rate. In comparison with the control treatment, the lowest germination rate values determined at 180 mM NaCl salinity and 60 ppm Cd. Shoot and root length was reduced significantly with a rise in NaCl and Cd levels. Cd concentration had a more depressing effect on the root than on the shoot growth. Interactive effects between Cd and NaCl on dry weight and root length was significant. According to this study the interactive effect of both stresses were more than additive.

Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on Seed Germination and Seedling Growth in Thymus vulgaris L. and Thymus daenensis Celak under Salinity Stress
Germination represents a fundamental stage of plant life highly responsive to change of environmental conditions. Low germination percent and seedling establishment are basic problems in saline regions. One of the sensitive stages of plants to salinity is the germination stage. This study was conducted using a factorial experiment with three factors such as species with two levels (Thymus vulga...
متن کاملThe effect of exogenous silicon on seed germination and seedling growth of wheat cultivars under salt stress conditions
ABSTRACT- Seed germination and early seedling growth are critical stages for plants establishment and production, particularly under salinity conditions. Exogenous application of silicon (Si) can enhance germination as well as seedling growth. In this experiment, the effect of priming with Si (0, 0.75, 1.5 and 2.25 mM sodium silicate) on seed germination and seedling growth under NaCl (0, 100 a...
متن کاملOsmopriming Improves Spinach Seed Germination under Environmental Stress
Seed priming has been suggested to improve germination performance under temperature or water stress. The objective of this study was to develop an optimal osmopriming protocol for spinach (Spinacia oleracea L. cv. Bloomsdale) seeds and examine its effect on the germination performance at suboptimal and supraoptimal temperatures, and under water stress. Standard germination tests at optimal ger...

In order to extend the cultivation season and increase in growth ability in tropical regions, the effect of priming media, SA, NaCl, PEG, water and vitamin B1 with chemical elimination of pericarp by sulphuric acid, evaluated on growth characters of spinach under high temperature stress (25, 30, 35 °C). Results showed that PEG and vitamin B1 pretreatment after scarification with sulphuric a...
